Son of the house: 'It's great that you picked out the colors.' Father Willem: 'I'm so happy with it, we would never have dared to do this ourselves! Now we sit in the living room in front of the fireplace every evening again.'
The idea was that by adding color to the walls, we would enhance the atmosphere. That the colors would feel like a kind of warm blanket. By using color to reduce the contrast between the wall and the existing interior, a unified whole would be created instead of separate elements. Cohesion, harmony.
Willem didn't feel like doing the floor and/or the ceiling. So this was the challenge!
And how can you do that more beautifully than by amplifying the complementary colors that were already there.
The beams are Lichen Green by Farrow & Ball, and by carrying that color through to the dining room walls, a beautiful, tranquil unity has been created where the paintings harmonize with the walls. It is more spacious, calmer, and warmer all at the same time. Because the wall and the ceiling fall on different lights, the colors do not appear exactly the same, which makes it just a little more interesting!
The floor has a reddish-brown color. By magnifying the reddish-brown on the walls of the living room with a slightly different, sweeter, more elegant shade of reddish-brown, it suddenly created a connection between the floor and the ceiling with the complementary green, and the furniture and paintings.
In short, it took some puzzling to find the right shade of reddish-brown that would enhance the harmony with the existing light. And mission accomplished!
